Historical note

The Citizens' Councils (also known as White Citizens' Councils) were a network of white supremacist organizations. The first was formed in 1954; after 1956, the network was known as the Citizens' Councils of America. The Councils were founded to oppose racial segregation, and did so through boycotts, propaganda, and violence against civil rights activists.
