LAUSD Area K Administrative Information manual, 1976 - 1977
Scope and Content
The Los Angeles Unified School District counseling records consist of reports, papers, correspondence, brochures, and a manual that document some of the history and activity of school counseling services in the city of Los Angeles from the 1960s through the 1990s. At least some of the material was collected and created by Dr. Charles Espalin, Director of District Counseling Services in the 1980s-90s. The records contain material from the Los Angeles City Schools' Evaluation and Research Section; the Los Angeles City School District's Guidance and Counseling Section; LAUSD's Pupil Services and Guidance Branch, and District Counseling Services; and the Secondary Head Counselor's Organization of Los Angeles, and thus provide a broad overview of the changing roles of guidance counselors in Los Angeles' city schools--the development of services, the role of counselors in schools, training and certification, the administrative structure of counseling services, and of particular note, the issue of summer school closings in 1984.
