Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

Richard Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign and election campaign materials subseries contains memorandums, letters, notes, clippings, press releases, transcripts, reports, pamphlets, photographs, ephemera, realia, audiocassettes, and audiotapes, 1961-1969 (bulk 1968), created, collected, and used by Herbert G. Klein and members of his staff during Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign. Included is confidential political and voting data; memorandums from Murray Chotiner, the bulk of which are addressed to H.R. Haldeman, containing campaign information; Klein's notes regarding campaign strategizing; campaign research subject files containing information on the nomination, preparation for the convention, staff biographies, candidate itineraries, and press releases from Miami prior to and during the Convention; press conference and television appearance transcripts; speeches and reprints of articles by Nixon; information and public relations materials for Nixon's Key Issues Committee and its members, his surrogate candidates, and VIP speakers; information from and about the United Citizens for Nixon committee; miscellaneous media and campaign committee files consisting of press releases, clippings, and miscellaneous printed materials; clippings about the campaign organized by state; transcripts of speeches; press releases issued by other organizations; and information on Nelson Rockefeller. The campaign research subject files were compiled by Klein staffer Suzanne Low, who originally grouped public relations files under "Election," "Republican Party," "Nixon," and "Committees." Also included are copies of the Red Book, which contains national demographic data and election information, and was compiled by Klein staffer Margita White; daily press and post-convention schedules; focus group results; contact lists for campaign staff and press; the Nixon Sourcebook, which is a compilation of Nixon's and the Nixon family's biographical information, Nixon speeches, and remarks for use by campaign staff when creating campaign communications. The subseries also contains materials collected by Klein staffer Ginger Savelle, including committee reports, Republican party publications, and miscellaneous pamphlets. Because much of the latter material was collected by different members of Klein's staff, much of it exists in duplicate (and in some cases triplicate) form throughout this subseries (and elsewhere in the collection).
