Abstract
Photographs taken by Joseph Hawkins at the 1996 Tagata Honen Festival in Kamaki, Japan. This annual Shinto festival is a fertility rite and a celebration of life, and its key focus is a large phallus carved from a sacred Japanese cypress tree.
