Biography

Carrying on a long-standing family tradition of activism and civic engagement, Bill Wuzzy Spaulding is a 14th generation American whose ancestors fought at Bunker Hill, and whose great-great-grandfather helped incorporate the City of Buffalo, New York. Spaulding's accomplishments include serving on the Executive Board of the City of West Hollywood Incorporation Committee, and spearheading the rewrite of California Penal Code Section 273.5 domestic violence law to include gays and lesbians.

Spaulding's career as an activist began in the early 1970s in New York, New York, with the National Gay Task Force when Jean O'Leary and Bruce Voeller were co-chairs. He has served on numerous committees and boards of directors, including Christopher Street West, Lobby for Individual Freedom and Equality (LIFE AIDS Lobby), Greater Los Angeles AIDS Hospice Foundation, Casa del Sol hospice, and the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Community Fund Advisory Committee of the California Community Foundation. He was an active volunteer in the campaign against California proposition 64 (also known as the LaRouche initiative), in the Long Beach pride parades, and in Imperial Courts activities in Southern California. In addition, Spaulding served as co-chair of the first West Hollywood Gay and Lesbian Task Force, which gave rise to West Hollywood's Gay and Lesbian Sheriff's Conference Committee, in which Spaulding was founding co-chair.
