Administrative History

The GLAAD Media Awards was first held in 1990 by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The annual ceremony honors outstanding representations in news, entertainment, and social media that have portrayed the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in just, precise and all-encompassing representations.

In its first annual Media Awards, GLAAD acknowledged 34 nominees in 7 categories. In 2012, GLAAD had their 23rd Annual Media Awards, which takes place in three cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. The theater category of the GLAAD Media Awards has three categories: Outstanding Los Angeles Theater; Outstanding New York Theater, Broadway & Off-Broadway; and Outstanding New York Theater, Off-Off-Broadway. The theater awards are local awards, and each city has its own selection committee.
