Scope and Content of Collection

Slides and photographs, 1964-2006, taken at sporting and Gay Pride events in California, New York, and in Europe; at Mardi Gras and Southern Decadence in New Orleans; at MCC General Conferences; and at gay-oriented events relating to the Asian Pacific community in the Continental US and Thailand. Sporting events include Gymfest, held annually in September at Santa Monica Beach; Gay Games 3 (Vancouver, 1990), 4 (New York, 1994), and 5 (Amsterdam, 1998), and various swim meets and lifeguard and bodybuilding contests held in Southern California. Gay Pride events include Christopher Street West, Los Angeles (from 1972), and pride parades in San Francisco, Long Beach, San Diego, Stonewall 25 (1994) in New York, and Christopher Street Day celebrations in Germany (from 1996), and gay pride events in Thailand (from 1998). MCC General Conferences include Atlanta (1973), Washington, DC (1976), Toronto (1983), Sacramento (1985), St. Paul (1989), and Sydney (1997). The slides predominate for the period 1964-1989; for the period 1989-1994 there is some overlap, with several events documented in both slides and photographs.

Biography

William S. Tom died on September 27, 2016, in Hollywood, California. He was born on June 5, 1931. The sole surviving brother of James L. Tom, in Oakland, California and the uncle of Dana and Allison Tom. Tom graduated from University of Berkeley with a Bachelors of Science in mathematics and a Master of Business of Administration from California Lutheran College. He worked at the Naval Ordnance Test Station in China Lake, California and the Naval Missile Test Center in Point Mugu, California until his retirement. He taught at the Ventura Community College after retirement and volunteered at an American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Center in Van Nuys helping seniors with their income tax [forms]. He was a world traveler until his passing with many friends in Southern California, Germany, and Thailand.
