Series Scope and Content

From the Series:

This series contains photographic images, including prints and negatives, taken by Mary Whitlock from 1974 to approximately 1990 in her professional capacity. The materials include a portfolio of images taken early in Whitlock's career of weddings and catered events; a professional portfolio binder of 11 x 16-inch black-and-white images of Gay Pride in New York City in 1976 and in Los Angeles in 1984, of the Griffith Park Observatory, and of various children; and six color slide portfolios from 1984 through 1990, containing images of Cape Cod National Park, Los Angeles apartment interiors, Hollywood movie sets, ancient ruins in Mexico and Italy, actors James Coburn and Nanette Fabray, writer Michael Creighton, and the 1986 Miss Black Los Angeles contest. The remaining photographs and negatives primarily document the Los Angeles GLBT, in particular Lesbian, community. GLBT events include a rally of Lesbians at Boston University in February 1974; the canals of Venice march by the performance group Sisters of Survival in 1983; a performance by Terry Wolverton and the MECLA annual dinner, both in 1985; the Lesbian and Gay Health Conference and an unidentified Connexus event, both in 1987; the UCLA/Woman's Building "Art Criticism for Women in the 90s" and UCLA "Friends of Women" conferences, both in 1988; the West Coast Women's Music Festival and dedication of the Robert Alan Kettelhack Memorial AIDS Chapel at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church in Hollywood, both in 1989; undated Stonewall and Liberty Hill Foundation events; and several unidentified formal and informal events. The collection also contains photo shoots of GLBT individuals, including Sally Fiske, Katherine V. Forest, Jim La Maida, Paul Monette, Tori Osborne, and Yolanda Retter, and an undated photo shoot for a poster for the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Community Services Center (GLCSC).
