Scope and Content of Collection
This collection contains a photograph album, autograph books, event fliers, correspondence, newsletters and miscellaneous materials relating to A Different Light Bookstore, collected by James Morrow. The photograph album was prepared by Ann Bradley for the 5th anniversary celebration of A Different Light in 1984, and includes photographs from the bookstore's earliest days; at the end are several similar pages of photographs from the 10th anniversary celebration in 1989. The collection also includes administrative papers for two organizations: Emergence and the Alliance. Miscellaneous materials include: a checklist of lesbian and gay landmarks in Los Angeles; a program for Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (November 22, 1981); a photocopy of an article in the Village Voice (November 3, 1998) and other materials concerning the Coors Boycott; a questionnaire from the National Advisory Group, "Policing Lesbian and Gay Communities," about experiences and attitudes of lesbians and gay men regarding reporting homophobic-related crime to the police; a program from a memorial service for author Paul Monette; and one copy of Art Papers: Representing Lesbian Subjectivities [November/December, 1994; 18 (6)]. Additionally, the collection includes Morrow's notes from various workshops in which he participated on self-defense and hate crimes, as well as cards sent to him from his peers.
