Historical Note
The Silent Lovers depicts the ill-fated love affair between Greta Garbo and John Gilbert (played by Mackenzie Phillips and Barry Bostick). The made-for-TV movie was produced by David Wolper-Stan Margulies Productions and aired on NBC in 1980. Margulies received a producer's credit for his work on it and was nominated (along with Wolper) for the Outstanding Limited Series Emmy. The film won an Emmy and was nominated for another five. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best TV-Series - Drama, along with This Year's Blonde and The Scarlett O'Hara Wars. The movie was part of the "Moviola" series that also included This Year's Blonde and The Scarlett O'Hara Wars.
