Historical Note

Roots, which was produced by David L. Wolper Productions and aired on ABC in 1977, was, at the time of its airing, the most watched television program ever. While the record it set has since been surpassed, the miniseries still holds the distinction of being one of the first to air over consecutive weeknights (as opposed to once a week for consecutive weeks). The miniseries is based on Alex Haley's book of the same name, in which he spent twelve years researching his genealogy. Roots covers the generations from enslavement and transportation to America and emancipation during the Civil War. Margulies received a producer's credit and won an Emmy for Oustanding Limiting Series (along with David L. Wolper). The miniseries won another eight Emmys and was nominated for an additional 28. It also won a Golden Globe for Best TV-Series-Drama and Leslie Uggams received a nomination for Best TV Actress-Drama.
