Abstract

Gerhard Weissler was a professor of physics at the University of Southern California from 1944 until 1988, and chairman of the university's physics department from 1951 to 1956. Born in Germany in 1918, Weissler earned his degree in physics at the Institute of Technology, Berlin, but his politics resulted in his expulsion from Germany. He continued his education in California, earning his master's and PhD in physics at the University of California, Berkeley. From 1942 to 1944, Weissler taught medical physics at the University of California medical school, then relocated to Los Angeles where he joined the physics department at the University of Southern California. He remained as a professor of physics there the rest of his life, including heading the physics department in the 1950s. He was credited with making USC prominent in the fields of ultraviolet atomic and molecular spectroscopy and was a past director of the school's Nuclear Accelerator Laboratory. Gerhard Weissler died in 1989.

This small collection contains two copies of a report (by Weissler) titled The Early Years of Vacuum UV Radiation Physics at USC: a 30th Anniversary; dated May 1, 1978.T There are also two copies of a curriculum vitae that Weissler updated in May 1989, about a month before he died.
