Scope and Contents
The Raymond Valencia Lopez papers consist of 30 boxes of books, 7 boxes of serials, and 46 boxes of archival material created and/or collected by Los Angeles educator, performer, and musicologist, Raymond Valencia Lopez (1921-2009). The focus of the collection is on Mexican and Latin American classical music, especially for piano, organ, and Tarahumara music and culture in Mexico. The collection also contains Valencia Lopez's correspondence with Latin American and Iberian musicologist Robert M. Stevenson (1916-2012). Other material in the collection includes printed works created for early bilingual education instruction, a wooden marimba from Mexico, and various audio recordings, including recordings of Valenica Lopez's own performances. Valencia Lopez received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern California in 1947.

Separated Materials
In 2023, the USC Libraries began separating published material from the Raymond Valencia Lopez papers archival collection. This material was transferred to the USC Music Library for item-level cataloging or deaccessioning. The publications that were cataloged are accessible via the USC Libraries catalog search.
Processing Information
The collection is unprocessed. The Boeckmann Center plans to separate the books and serials from the archival material during future processing.
