Scope and Content

Bound transcript of an oral history interview conducted by Barbara Franklin Hane Desforges of her mother in 1979 and 1981. The book chronicles the life of Margaret Russell Bates Hanes through her memories of childhood in Macon and Atlanta, Georgia; memories of Mammy (Fannie Mills) who took care of the children; World War I and the troops stationed on Saint Simons Island; her mother's background in Mobile, Alabama; her father's service in the Spanish-American War and career in the shoe business; experiences as a Girl Scout and receiving Golden Eagle award from Scout founder Juliette Low; her older sister Dot's friendship with author Margaret Mitchell; college life in Michigan, Georgia, and then USC where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism and Master's degree in Political Science. Her second Master's was in Pupil Personnel Counseling from California State University, Los Angeles. The transcript continues with Margaret's employment at USC and her marriage to Frank Hane. Her story discusses financial problems during the Great Depression and Frank's gas stations and oil refinery business; the birth of the three daughters; Frank's arrest and imprionment for dealing with stolen gasoline (later found innocent); Margaret's take-over of the oil business after her husband's death and then subsequent selling of the business to Exxon.
