Scope and Contents

Richard Nixon's early political career series contains correspondence, memorandums, press releases, transcripts, clippings, appointment books, photographs, ephemera, speeches, itineraries, reports, pamphlets, press kits, notes, cartoons, caricatures, and motion pictures generated, received, collected, and created by Herbert G. Klein, 1940-1962 (bulk 1956-1961), in performance of his daily duties as Special Assistant to the Vice President and Press Secretary for the Vice President during the 1958 and 1960 campaigns, and during Nixon's second term as Vice President. Included are memorandums sent to H.R. Haldeman by Klein; letters to and from Nixon that were handled by Klein's office; clippings, editorials and endorsements about and of Nixon; transcripts of Nixon speeches; itineraries for various trips; election and demographic information; reports on press coverage and biases; information on and transcripts of the Nixon-Kennedy debate; national and local newspaper staff and circulation information; notes and memorandums regarding the planning and press coverage of Nixon's trip to the Soviet Union; texts of speeches made in Russia and Poland; printed ephemera for the January 1957 Presidential and Vice-Presidential inaugurations; and photographs and films documenting Nixon's early political career, the 1956 Vice-presidential campaign, and the 1960 presidential election.
